The most common minerals in the world are the feldspars, which make up nearly 60% of the earth's crust. By contrast, another very common mineral, quartz, has as least a dozen well-known gemstone varieties, including amethyst, citrine, tiger's eye, chalcedony and agate.
There are two main subgroups of feldspar that produce gem-quality material: the potassium feldspars and the plagioclases, a series that ranges from calcium to sodium feldspars. Among the feldspar gemstones are moonstone, orthoclase, amazonite, andesine, labradorite and sunstone.
Amazonite, moonstone and orthoclase are all potassium feldspars. They have a hardness of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, and a vitreous luster. Moonstone is a very well-known gemstone, but orthoclase and amazonite are not.
Amazonite is a gemstone variety of green microcline. It is named after the Amazon river in Brazil, though surprisingly no deposits have been found in that location. The story is that some green stones were once found in the Amazon river area, but mineralogists believe that there is no green feldspar there, though there are deposits elsewhere in Brazil.
The lively green or blue-green color of amazonite can be quite beautiful when polished. Since amazonite is an opaque stone, it is usually fashioned as cabochons. It is a medium-hard material, rating 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, so it is not ideally suited to rings. But it makes very attractive earrings and pendants.
For many years, the source of amazonite's color was a mystery. Many people assumed the color was due to traces of copper because copper compounds often have blue and green colors. More recent studies suggest that the blue-green color results from small quantities of lead and water in the feldspar.
Amazonite is found in relatively few locations in the world. At one time it was found almost exclusively in Russia, in the Ilmen mountains. More recently, deposits have been found in the USA (Colorado), Brazil and Madagascar.
Amazonite is said to calm one's emotions and soothe nerves, and to enhance creativity and the ability to express oneself. Perhaps the strongest recommendation for its metaphysical power is that Amazonite is said to make your married life happier.

Any gem collectors out there know what this big story is?
Question:
on andesine labradorite? I turned on JTV and this is all they're talking about and they're selling all of their inventory on the air. But they won't give the news. I have yellow and red, but I'm wondering if I should purchase the green as well. Don't know if this will be that "big" as they're saying that I should buy one now.

I was going to wait to have more money to purchase a bigger stone, but they're selling out like crazy, so I want it it at least have a speciman of it in my collection. I have a feeling value is going up...I wouldn't re-sell it.

part of the reason a gem is precious or highly valued is that it means something to someone. so if you love this gem and just want to have it, then buying is a great idea. if you're buying just cuz you're hoping to resell it later, it may be a risky investment, since its not a highly precious stone, but only semi-precious. its true that its rare, thus the prices, and its new, thus the fame, however, still not a diamond, an emerald or a garnet (the 3 biggies). further research shows that its the colors and the personal likeness of the stone that make it so desirable. see info below...

If you are looking at a stone and confused as to its identity, ask the seller the type and origin. Be aware, however, that a few of these gem types are closely related with only subtle differences. As a result, there is some confusion and debate as to classification, and even an expert might not be willing to give a firm identification of the type and source of a stone. On the other hand, some sellers are mine owners or have close relationship with mining companies, which allows them to be very confident as to the stone's identity. Rather than being overly concerned with the specific sub-type, most of us focus more on the stone's beauty and personal appeal - i.e., a well-cut, high-grade red Andesine and a high-grade red Oregon Sunstone can look alike, and can be difficult to distinguish without expensive test equipment, but are both rare and nearly equal in value.
