Ramparts were steep banks of earth or rubble. Attackers had to climb over them to get closer to the castle.
Machicolations were stone boxes that projected from the walls of castes and had holes in the floors for dropping stones or boiling oil on attackers. Wooden version these were called hourdes.

All you can do is to rephrase. You would need to keep to the technical names of the castle. I suppose you could omit them altogether.
The castle walls gave shelter (merlons) to the defenders,as well as allowing them to fire on the approaching enemy. These slits (crenels) in the walls could be covered by wooden shutters (hourdes).
The attackers also had to climb up a steep incline(rampart) to reach the castle, risking attack from above. Heavy rocks or scalding fat could be dropped from holes in the floor of the small, protruding rooms (machiolations) above their heads. These boxes could be either made of stone or wood. .
